Fearless Christmas Giveaway

A couple of days ago I was visited by a ghost from Christmas past; the dark days when I was obsessed with skincare to such an extent that I would have thought nothing of resorting to drastic measures.  Apparently, as my name was still on their mailing list, this company was happy to offer me a 15% discount on their latest anti-ageing injections. Since when did anti-ageing injections become so commonplace they are the subject of promotional texts? Yes, yes, text updates can be useful – your delivery will arrive between 14.00 to 15.00 hrs., there are planned engineering works on the Bakerloo line this weekend, you are entitled to a discount on injecting poison directly into your bloodstream…hang on a minute!! What on earth would drive a logical individual to carry out such an unnatural act? We are conditioned from a very early age to avoid dangerous substances, and let's face it injections aren't anybody’s idea of a good time, so what is the motivation? The simple desire to look good, or an even more powerful fear?  I believe that it is the latter; perhaps the most powerful fear of all:

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”.  HP Lovecraft

Consider this video, where a perfectly lovely looking lady is photoshopped into Barbiesque proportions:

Is plastic “perfection” really better?  Wanting to look good is a natural and healthy feeling, but we have somehow reached the tipping point; hurtled into a conformist Animal Farm type society that sets out clear rules for "looking good".  If we were to flagrantly flout these rules, what would happen?

Would it be that scary to age naturally, working with nature rather than against it?  Ageing without intervention has become a great unknown, something which must surely have terrible consequences in an image obsessed world:

"Fear is a distorting mirror in which anything can appear as a caricature of itself, stretched to terrible proportions; once inflamed, the imagination pursues the craziest and most unlikely possibilities. What is most absurd suddenly seems the most probable" Stefan Zweig

For me the greatest irony is that Botox and/or surgical procedures can actually cause this distorted, caricature image (in effect we create our own worst nightmare).  Heavily botoxed visages make me think of Scooby Doo cartoons - scenes where villains keep tabs on the gang without being noticed, simply because it appears the eyes following them from the paintings they walk by aren't real. The BBC published an interesting article this Halloween highlighting how the horror-film appeal of zombies is rooted in an instinctive disquiet at faces that are almost human.  There is something very sinister about cosmetic surgery, the skin is perfectly smooth and imperfection free, but there is no movement, the person no longer seems real, as if an inner light has been extinguished leaving an empty shell.

At this point the ghost of Christmas present proffers a different solution, I would say less radical, but in a world where people can pop out for lunchtime fillers (I'm not referring to sandwiches) it feels almost rebellious to work with nature. The Dr.Hauschka approach to skincare has often caused raised eyebrows (well in non -botoxed individuals at least) .... what do you mean no night-time moisturiser?" The Dr Hauschka Regenerating range (renamed the Rejoicing range in my grasshopper mind) is designed specifically to help support the skin in the aging process. Whilst the Day Cream is slightly too rich for my skin at present, I am big fan of the Regenerating  Serum ( which I wrote a piece about back in February 2012, Cinderella Skin), the gloriously scented Regenerating Body Moisturiser is also on my Christmas wish list, as too is the Regenerating Eye Cream.

A key ingredient in these products is Red clover. This plant works on both a physical and emotional level.  It is particularly rich in isoflavones (substances also known as phytoestrogens because of their similarity to estrogens), which help the skin combat premature signs of ageing. Traditionally Red clover has been used in situations where excessive fear and panic dominate. For the Celts, clover dedicated to the goddesses was a symbol of happiness and a talisman against evil spirits. It could ward off spells and grant second sight.  It is used to bring inner peace so that outer stimuli can no longer mislead you or sweep you along in the surrounding chaos - perfect in the current media frenzy of anti-ageing treatments.   Be fearless, be bold, be yourself; like a snowflake you are beautiful and unique so rejoice in it!

Prunus amygdalus....the Hauschka spell!

I suppose, given that I have done it for two years running, it can now be called a tradition; the happy tradition of Hauschka Halloween. Last year I carved a Rose pumpkin.  This year, in celebration of another key ingredient, I chose Almond flowers.

Ok, technically the blossom is not used in the products; but a nut would not be so visually appealing.  It might be easier to carve though....makes mental note for next year!  I don't have sophisticated equipment (unlike some people who take pumpkin carving very seriously indeed http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24678803), and whilst I worked I wished there was a magic spell to quickly complete the job.  Having completely forgotten what was uttered in Cinderella, and not wanting my pumpkin to turn into a coach at any rate, I mused that the Latin for Almond would make a pretty convincing Harry Potter sounding spell - Prunus Amygdalus!!! With a puff of smoke I present “The Almond Pumpkin”:

Almond

I thought that creating an Almond blossom ring was a nice way to reflect the cyclic nature of skin, the renewal and rhythm which is at the heart of the Dr.Hauschka routine.

Here is a Halloween run down of my favourite 3 products which contain Almond

1) Cleansing Cream  - Inspired by the Almond paste used by Elisabeth Sigmund’s mother, this is a magical cream (not scrub!).

  Cleansing Cream

How does it work its magic spell? Press and roll you way to super soft, super clear skin.  It works in harmony with the skin’s metabolism, encouraging the lymph system’s cleansing functions and awakening skin to radiant beauty.

2) Moisturising Mask

I always think the face masks are a good choice for Halloween.  I tend towards the oily skin spectrum, so left to my own devices would have probably shunned this product described as “an intensive moisturising treatment” (how rude of me!)  Fortunately, for the state of my wellbeing, it was recommended to me by a lovely Haushka esthetician

Moisturising Mask

How does it work its magic spell?  All your problems seem to melt away as this super hero mask restores the natural balance of your skin, no tricks just a treat.

3) Almond Bath Bath Essence

This is my favourite of all the new bath essences, a marzipan temptation that has me hooked with its sweet fragrance and soothing caress.

Almond Bath Essence

How does it work its magic spell? It transports me to a beautiful dream world.  This product proved to be an inspiration for another carving, as after an Almond Bath I forgot my lack tools or experience and used the Hauschka spell to create “The Hummingbird Pumpkin”.  The beautiful, dancing colours remind me of the amber coloured bath essence.

Wishing you a Happy Hauschka Halloween.

Bath Essence Giveaway–Downton Abbey Style….

Bath Essences

"What could be better than drawing a bath, closing the door and slipping into a wonderfully fragrant world where you can dwell entirely on your thoughts?"  This is the enticing introduction for the new Dr.Hauschka Bath essences.  One small problem, my phlegmatic temperament* is disturbed by change to the established order; I was happy with the previous bath essences and my thoughts revolve around panic that they have been replaced!

*The four temperaments are a system for describing certain aspects of a person's personality – Choleric (red), Sanguine (yellow), Phlegmatic (green), Melancholic (blue). They are not meant to describe personality wholly; rather emotional traits:

Personality

Most Likely to say..

 Traits

Choleric

Ambitious and leader-like

Lights, Camera, Action!”

*Brash* Prone to anger * Short fuse* Proud * Confident *Forceful* Needs to see results* Gets things done* *Doesn't show weakness* Strong * Makes things their business* Likes to be in charge* Likes things their way*  Stubborn* Can't admit if they're wrong* Defiant*  Demanding* More likely to fight than flee* Tends to show little emotion other than anger * Passionate* Vengeful* Dislikes following* Contrary* Condescending* Likely to offer advice* Criticises others* Loves winning* Likely to humiliate the one they defeated/dominated* Gives advice or help which isn't asked for* Tends to blame others*

Sanguine

Pleasure-seeking and sociable

Where’s the party?”

*Bubbly* Social*Displays emotions openly* Changes emotions quickly* Upbeat* Outgoing *Positive* Extroverted* Loves attention* Exciting* Life of the Party* Chatty* Follows trends* Dramatic* Attention seeking* Very emotional* Expresses emotion openly* Flighty* Unreliable* Spontaneous* Likes more than they dislike* Make you feel comfortable when talking with them* Vain, narcissistic* Makes friends quickly and often* Naturally physical *touchy-feely* Tends to move on rather than blaming anyone*

Phlegmatic

Relaxed and quiet

A place for everything, everything in its place

*Meek*Inoffensive*Submissive*Follower* Can't say no* *Struggles with decisions* Prefers others to decide for them*Shy*Quiet*Listener*Boring* Doesn't assert themselves*Doesn't like change ..but will rather change themselves than cause conflict* Easy-going in normal situations....but they panic if put into new situations* Doesn't crave excitement*Tends to show little emotion*Not very passionate*Trustworthy*Low confidence* Fears doing things wrong*Avoids conflict*Finds leading stressful rather than desirable* Also tends to find winning against someone else stressful rather than a reward* They do not seek personal glory* Does not believe they know best* Gives in easily rather than arguing... ...or feels extremely nervous and upset if they do argue* Tends to blame self *

Melancholic

Introverted and thoughtful

Let me think it over

*Serious* Prone to misery* Emotionally sensitive *Analytical* Critical*Self-deprecating* Needs things to be RIGHT* Creative* Moved to tears by beauty*Bitter* Can have unrealistically high standards*Introverted* Stubborn* Selfish*Easily upset*Rejects others so then they aren't themselves rejected* Very emotional, but keeps emotions inside mostly*Passionate* Holds grudges*Unreliable*Pessimistic*Deep and thoughtful*Prefers planning to spontaneous action*May dislike more than they like*Intense*Corrects others*Reluctant to make friends*Takes ages for them to consider someone a friend*Suspicious*Untrusting* Often complains*Tends to blame self*

Susan West-Kurtz (Awakening Beauty the Dr. Hauschka Way) stresses that we all possess these four temperaments within us, yet tend to be more comfortable with only one or two of them:

“The more we explore each temperament, the more we can navigate in and out of each one, depending on the demands of the situation we are facing.  That is a kind of mastery that each of us is striving for.  The more wedded we are to a single temperament, the more likely we are to suffer the imbalances associated with that way of being”

It is perhaps easier to see the imbalance in others more clearly than it is in yourself, but here is my quick “You know you are majorly imbalanced when…” guide:

Choleric

You could pick a fight in an empty room

Sanguine

Planet earth would like you to return and sort your life out

Phlegmatic

You consider the purchase of a box of paperclips as a risky endeavour

Melancholic

You have Morrissey on repeat on your iPod and consider Eeyore quite a ‘cheerful’ literary character.

Restoring balance is something you can do very easily for yourself, or for others (especially when they have become so far entrenched in a particular frame of mind it is hard for them to help themselves) my favourite way to balance the temperaments within is with Dr.Hauschka bath essences, but which one of the new fragrances do I need? Here is a quick run down of what is on offer:

Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence
”At the end of a difficult day or as you prepare for the next one, Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence helps you to relax and slow down the thoughts racing through your mind. The fragrance of lavender is not only soothing, but also helps you to achieve clarity, feel grounded and focus on what is important. In addition to lavender, this composition features a moor extract as well as extracts of horse chestnut and field horsetail, prepared in a special rhythmic procedure. When combined with the warm water it is particularly effective in letting you shut out the turbulent world outside your bathroom door. Almond and avocado oils gently moisturise the skin. Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence helps you to clear your mind while relaxing your body.”

Rose Nurturing Bath Essence
”As you pour this creamy bath milk into the running bath water, your bathroom is transformed into a rose garden in full bloom. Rose water, essential rose oil and extracts of rose petals infuse this floral bath essence with the surprising complexity of the rose. You will feel like royalty as you enjoy your bath. A balm for the spirit, Rose Nurturing Bath Essence infuses you with both tranquillity and vitality. The composition, which includes almond and avocado oils, leaves the skin feeling soft and silky.”

Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence
“A bath with Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence will infuse you with new energy and lift your spirits. The fresh fragrance of sun-ripened lemons harmonises with exotic lemon grass to create a carefree mood and awaken your zest for life. This bath essence not only contains gently moisturising sunflower oil, but lemon and lemon grass to tone and activate the skin. Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence helps you to start the day full of new energy – or recharge your batteries in the evening before a night on the town.”

Almond Soothing Bath Essence
”The complex fragrance of this new, moisturising bath essence invites your senses on voyage of discovery – from the delicate freshness of the first almond blossoms to the warm sweetness of the almond fruit. Shimmering in a transparent shade of yellow gold, the bath essence is soft and creamy as it spreads through the warm water. In the bath you will experience the sense of well-being imparted by the almond oil as it delicately embraces your skin and envelops your body.”

Here are my initial thoughts on which essences would be good for helping restore balance when a particular temperament is running riot:

Choleric

Moor Lavender

Reduces tension and inflammation. Cools and relaxes the body in a gentle, protective way.

Sanguine

Rose

Brings harmony, restoring our connection with nature

Phlegmatic

Lemon Lemongrass

Cuts through stagnation bringing new possibilities, like sunshine for the soul.

Melancholic

Almond

Sweetly lights the fire within, rekindles our passion.

Of late I have been so far imbalanced towards the phlegmatic spectrum that I could audition for the part of Carson in Downton Abbey!  I am really enjoying this season, a plot of light and shade; with some very dark storylines against the glittering 1920s jazz backdrop.

Downton obviously also loves Hauschka, cast member Samantha Bond, best known for her role as Lady Rosamund, is amongst its fans:

image

I swear by Dr. Hauschka... I find the Quince [Day Cream] the best under make-up!”

I wonder who else within the cast uses Dr.Hauschka products? Anyone with a glowing complexion would be a pretty sure bet.

With thoughts of Bath Essences firmly in my mind, here are some reflections on which bath would suit whom among the Downton characters:

1 ) Moor Lavender for scheming underbutler Thomas Barrow

Much of his anger can be attributed to the fact that he doesn't fit in.  As an outsider, he is not used to kindness or protection, revealed by his words at Lady Sybil's death.

"In my life, not many have been kind to me. She was one of the few."

The Lavender essence would be perfect for soothing and helping reduce the fire within.

downton_abbey_blog_thomas_0

2 ) Rose for a Wild Rose

A free spirit and a bit of the cuckoo in the nest.  She doesn't care about the rules, this girl just wants to have fun!  When her wild side is running riot she may benefit from the harmony of a Rose bath, it is strong but not abrupt, soft but not fragile.  I think the sensual nature of a rose petal bath would also appeal. (p.s I want a dress like this!)

Rose headpiece

3 ) Lemon Lemongrass for the change averse Butler

A stickler for tradition, a place for everything and everything in its place.  We have seen glimmers of sunshine and Lemon Lemongrass may awaken the more playful spirit within.

Spotted here with some Dr.Hauschka products in the foreground. The genuine Carson, not me – my imbalance is not quite that bad yet!.

Picture1

4 ) Almond for grieving Lady Mary

The Chinese consider the almond a symbol of enduring sadness and female beauty, which seems apt for Lady Mary in mourning. Prior to her relationship with Matthew, she had an ice cold and heartless facade; will this return to mask her loneliness and fear?  She is complex character, introspective and highly analytical - nothing is ever simple with Mary! I think the equally complex Almond bath is a sweet temptation to rekindle the warmer, lighter side of her being (p.s. I would also like a dress like this!).

Put my money where my heart is...

When it came to slogans, my late grandmother had a real flare; regularly winning competitions by completing the allocated question in “no more than 12 of her own words” (‘because Ajax is the household agent with all the best properties’ type of thing).  Alas, this is not a gift we share.  In fact as a child I always took the instructions rather too literally, thinking that 12 of my own words had to be exactly that i.e.12 hitherto unused words that I had personally invented (flinklesome, moomafluff…no real surprise my entries where swiftly consigned to the bin). Even with the ‘own word’ issue clarified, I still struggled with the word limit.  Fast forward some 30 years, still with a propensity to ramble, I often balk at the thought of answering questions (slogan competition or otherwise) for fear the right words will escape me once again.  Fortunately if something is truly right it never passes you by; so when asked why I invested in the Stockwood Community Benefit Society (Stockwood CBS), the answer comes to me very easily “both my head and my heart knew it was a sound investment

I appreciate most people reading this are now thinking, the Stockwood Community Benefit you what now?  In short it is a trust created to bring Rush Farm and Stockwood Business Park into community ownership and to ensure they benefit society forever - check out their website http://stockwoodcbs.org/ , plus a feature in Blue and Green tomorrow http://blueandgreentomorrow.com/features/stockwood-cbs-putting-a-local-farm-in-the-hands-of-the-people/ for details.

I had been weighing up various investment options when I serendipitously stumbled across a link to CBS on Twitter (somewhat restoring my faith in all things Twitter, social media is such a mixed blessing at times).   I have had the enormous fortune to visit Rush Farm in my capacity as a Dr.Hauschka brand ambassador (Elysia Natural Skin Care, based in Stockwood Business Park, is the sole importer and distributor for the Dr.Hauschka range of skin care products within the UK). I have also had the good fortune to attend talks by Sebastian Parsons, Elysia CEO and founder of the CBS. He really is an amazing person; a rare mix of business flare and environmental vision, a far cry from the image of biodynamic farming sometimes portrayed by the media (any mention of moonlight and they disappear into the realms of witchcraft, sorcery and voodoo).   One of the key things that I have learnt via my involvement with Elysia is that as individuals we have the power to make a difference, or to put it in rather clichéd terms “Every drop makes an Ocean”.  I knew that whether I invested £100 or £20,000 my investment would count; that I would be a valued member of the community.  This was a chance not only to make a profit (my head is sternly telling me this is an important consideration), 5% return is a pretty competitive rate, but to make a real difference in terms of education and environment (goodness knows I bang on enough about the these topics, nice to have a chance to put my money where my heart is for a change)

Time To Be Liv....

Ever since the 'Great British Sewing Bee' I have had plans to make myself a spectacular new wardrobe (or rather the contents of said wardrobe).  There is one incy wincy flaw in my cunning plan.  Alas, my sewing 'skills', like my knitting 'skills' (or indeed my ability to assemble a flatpack should I ever wish to make that wardrobe) are non-existent.  My brother has the DIY gene. He only has to glance at one of those Home Makeover programmes and he can rustle himself up a set of wooden stairs, a welsh dresser, a fireplace. Whilst I, on the other hand, can't even be trusted with a row of cross-stitch.  Even the simple "make this at home" instructions of the Great British Sewing Bee were completely over my head ("sew the what to the where now?").   I take comfort in the fact that I must possess some other skill, but unless you count my X-Man type ability to blow up electrical equipment, this is still waiting to make a grand entrance.

This is where Liv clothing comes to the rescue.  Their entire range is made with such loving care and attention, it is as good as handmade (well if the hand happens to be mine, much, much better).  The recent disaster in the Bangladesh clothing factory has also made me greatly reflect on the true price tag of our clothing choices:

"You have to take responsibility to make sure that the workers you are using are not risking their lives so that we can have £2 t-shirts on our high street." Sam Maher CCC (Clean Clothes Campaign)

Liv is a Fairtrade Foundation Licensee, regularly visiting all parts of their supply chain to ensure the following standards are met:

  1. Employment is freely chosen, human rights respected and living wages paid
  2. Employee rights are respected with no discrimination of any sort practiced
  3. Working conditions are safe and hygienic, with regular work made available
  4. There is no child labour
Clichéd I know, but every drop in the consumer ocean really does count. As individuals we have terrific power to bring about change - the biro philosophy "BIC" (well actually "Believe in Change", nothing to do with pens.. I have such a grasshopper mind!).

Fortunately change, fairness and style go hand in hand at Liv (hmmmm that makes three hands, which is not so attractive, but I know what meant when I started the sentence...)

Now is an excellent time to try out Liv clothing, they are running a competition to win any garment from the SS13* Ray of Light collection - details are on the Liv facebook page

"Simply like our page, continue to share the love with some of your besties and then head on over to www.livlovestyle.wordpress.com and enter by signing-up using your email address. The winner will be chosen at random from the email addresses received. Full T&Cs are detailed on the link"

* For ages I thought this meant "Space Station 13" and couldn't really see an astronaut theme to the garments, but then someone entirely more sensible (my cat) pointed out this might be Spring/Summer 2013...darn that cat has brains!

My favourite pieces from the range are:

Fern top (pictured in Cream, but also available in Denim and Jet) .  It is super comfortable, stylish and makes me think I'm wearing a leaf (in a good way, it has beautiful patterns...ok forget the leaf comment, it is gorgeous!)

Island top (pictured in Coral, but also available in  Ocean Blue)

"A nod to the 80s, this slouchy split sleeve top is a lesson in relaxed style"

Ok, I admit I did attempt to put my head through an arm hole initially, but it is a great summer top, I love it.

Check out the entire range online and don't forget to enter and share the competition!

A Blog of 3 Parts - Revised

Part One: An Apology

“My dearest blog, I’m so sorry that I have neglected you for some time now, it is just that I have been so incredibly bus…”

Whoa, hang on a minute lady, don’t you dare say busy!” Blog angrily brushes dust and cobwebs from fonts, tumbleweed blows through page for dramatic effect.

“I wasn’t going to say busy!” *rapidly thinks of words beginning with bus (which incidentally could be a round on “Pointless”, I will suggest this to Richard Osman via Twitter)…business, busybody, busking,  ..more like busted…… bustle..ermmmmm…bushy* “I have been so incredibly bushy!”

You are claiming that you have been too bushy to write?”- Blog eyes me suspiciously:

“I have photographic evidence….”

Exhibit A - Photographic Evidence
That is just fobbing me off with a cute picture you found on the internet!”

“No, it is a picture of me yesterday, after I finished mowing the lawn *she lied, although the look is pretty similar*… I have been neglecting the garden too.  It is not just you Blog, please don’t take it personally!”

Giant spider, body the size of a cupcake, falls down from Blog heading, shakes fist menacingly and scuttles across the page...Blog is not happy, not happy at all.

“Oh come on, Blog!  I have exciting news...”

Ok… I suppose we can be friends once more

“You are the nicest blog in the world!!"

Part Two: Exciting News!

This might be a blog in three parts, but the exciting news comes in four parts, as this is the number of new body washes being launched by Dr.Hauschka from May 1st (my inner child still finds the word “launched” amusing in this context: mental images of products flying through the air).  The body washes come in 200ml (non- flying) pump dispensers, are suitable for all skin types and retail at £12.95 each.  There are four different scents to complement your mood:
Lemon Lemongrass – Vitalising

"Natural essential oil made from fresh lemongrass emits a gentle citric fragrance, encouraging vitality and brightness. Invigorating and awakening summery notes of lemon and lime stimulate the mind, creating a wonderful burst of refreshment."

Almond  -Soothing

"A vanilla base is mixed with delicate floral fragrances including ylang-ylang to calm and invoke a feeling of harmony. Combined with almond, this body wash offers a refreshing and soothing start to each day."

Rose -Nuturing

"The fresh fragrance found at the center of the rose bud is mixed with that of the fully-bloomed rose to create a light and playful undertone with a regal and seductive finish. Extracts of rose petal are combined with orange blossom to create a deliciously floral scent."

Lavender Sandalwood  - Calming

"Calming lavender is complemented by a warming note of sandalwood in this restorative body wash. With its gentle, rejuvenating freshness, it envelops your skin with an amber-like warmth, projecting a sense of luxurious harmony. Ideal for a relaxing shower or bath at the end of a long day."

I must hasten to add that at this point in time I haven’t tried any of them, although my order is firmly in place.  I have total confidence they will be beautiful.   Rather like an episode of the detective mystery Columbo, it is not the outcome but how we arrive at that outcome that is questionable part; the anticipation is in discovering exactly how these additions to the range will work their magic (Note: if I am sadly mistaken, and the products aren’t amazing,  I will happily eat Columbo’s raincoat, sautéed with cigar ash..such is my faith in all things Dr. Hauschka!).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Three:  Friendship (and an even bigger apology)

My Blog is protesting that this just another excuse to re-post a cute picture I spotted on Facebook, but it is so lovely I wanted to share it…

Anyone who saw an earlier version of this post will know that I had hoped to run a body wash giveaway (the chance to celebrate an important friendship in your life by winning one wash for you, one as a gift to share).  However, due to the enormous success of the pre-orders, this will have to wait for a later date - I am so sorry, I promise it will return later in the year.  However, every cloud has a silver lining as one lovely lady had already entered, and I'm delighted to say there is just one Lavender wash still available to send as a thank you for being first to post, and also because you sounded like you really needed the Hauschka love (Nicki R - well done!)
